"Mary Ellen Should Have Been a Puppy" by Vivian Jenkins

 At the age of 8, in 1872, Mary Ellen Wilson was put up for adoption. The little girl with a sparkling and congenial personality was placed in the home of a misguided man and his cold-hearted wife. The light put on the unconscionable abuses Mary Ellen suffered at their hands, in the days before U.S. child protection laws, forever changed the nature of children’s rights and protections.
